Religious Education Policy For Sacraments

Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb a reward. (Psalm 127:3)

Policy For Sacraments First Reconciliation, First Eucharist

1. Students must complete two consecutive years in the Religious Education Program (Kindergarten does not count toward this requirement). In accordance with diocesan guidelines, children must be at least in second grade before receiving the Sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist.

This two-year preparation policy applies throughout the diocese. Older children preparing to receive these sacraments are also required to complete a two-year preparation program.

2. Regular attendance in Religious Education classes is required. Students may have no more than three absences during the program year.

3. Students with more than three absences must complete a makeup class. Arrangements will be made on an individual basis.

4. It is preferred that families of students in the Religious Education Program be registered parishioners of Ss. Cyril & Methodius. Families who are registered at another parish may be required to provide a letter of permission from their home parish for sacramental preparation. Families without a home parish are welcome to register at Ss. Cyril & Methodius.

5. Before a student receives First Holy Communion, the student and their family must meet certain requirements.

During the first year of sacramental preparation, students and their families are expected to actively participate in the life of the Church through regular attendance at Mass (Saturday evening or Sunday) and consistent attendance in Religious Education classes.

These expectations continue into the second year of preparation, with the additional requirement that parents attend all scheduled sacramental meetings and follow the guidelines provided for the second year of preparation.

6. Students will receive their sacraments at Ss. Cyril & Methodius Parish during the month of May of their second year of preparation, at a date and time designated for their class.

7. This policy applies to all children baptized before the age of 7. Children age 7 or older who have not been baptized will follow the OCIA process for children. Please contact the office for more information if your child is 7 or older and has not yet been baptized, or click on this link OCIA EXPLANATION.
